Press Release11th November 2002A newly formed Buxton Peace Group presented Tom Levitt with a “Don’t Attack Iraq” card after his surgery last Saturday. The card was signed by many residents expressing their concern that our government seems likely to follow the United States in its planned invasion of Iraq. The card included a message from a local ten year old asking Mr Bush and Mr Blair not to go to war. She wrote “I am doing this for the people of Iraq, probably dreaming of an anti violent or peaceful life. One person probably will not change your ideas Mr Bush and Blair, but I wish it would.” The Peace Group, the Buxton Branch of the High Peak Stop the War Coalition, also held a vigil in Spring Gardens last Wednesday, on the National Day of Action. “As we commemorate the dead of two World Wars it is very timely for us to consider the terrible suffering and destruction that results from war and do all we can to solve the problems of the world through diplomacy and peaceful means,” said a spokesperson for the group. On receiving the card, Tom Levitt’s message was: “I do respect the sincerity of the people who let me know their views today. No one wants a war. This week’s unanimous resolution by the UN is the best way of making sure Iraq can pose no threat and therefore avoid the need for military action.” Articles may have been edited for the purpose of Internet publication.
