High Peak at the National Demonstration

Protesting against the attack on Iraq which began last Thursday and carrying a huge High Peak Against War banner people from Buxton, Chapel, New Mills and the villages joined the 750,000 plus demonstrators in London on Saturday. As part of the second biggest national demonstration ever organised in Britain they made their way to Hyde Park watched by the silent and respectful onlookers lining the streets. As they blew whistles and horns, as well as chanting and singing the thousands of marchers also made this one of the noisiest protests ever. “It’s unique this” said a protestor from New Mills, “there’s never been anything like this in the middle of a war and I am proud to have taken part – I regard it as my patriotic duty.” Sympathy was for all those suffering because of the fighting. Another protestor from New Mills added “I am appalled that Mothers of people in the British Forces are put in fear because their children have been sent to fight an illegal War.” Mother of two from Chapel said, “Now that innocent men, women and children are being killed demonstration against this war becomes more pressing and I will continue to protest against this illegal war until it stops and lets hope Bush does not continue with North Korea or Iran.” There were protest marches and gatherings throughout Britain on the day and a small group unable to join the Buxton coach to the National Demonstration made their own protest as they gathered by the Turner Memorial on Saturday morning.

Event:
Protests against the war will continue. Next Saturday at 11.00am Anti -War protestors will gather for a Peace protest in Spring Gardens by the Fountain. Women will bring white flowers to mourn the British casualties as well as the Iraqi casualties of the present conflict.
