Buxton Against War

Press Release

24th March 2003

Thursday Anti War Protests
Buxton Responds on the Day of Invasion

When war broke out last week there were protests throughout the day in Buxton. Small groups chanted from the Slopes, calling for peace and some shops displayed anti war notices. By Thursday evening people had gathered in Spring Gardens with banners, placards and lanterns, all age groups were represented from 18 to 80 and over! “This war is a travesty and a tragedy, it has no mandate and no justification" said the secretary of Buxton Against War. “If a crime is wrong before it is committed it is wrong while it is being committed which is why we will continue to protest against our governments pursuit of war against Iraq.” The protesters made their way down Spring Gardens to hold a vigil at the bottom of Fairfield Road and along Ashwood Dale. They lined the road holding candles and lanterns in the dark, the passing traffic demonstrated support - motorists and lorry drivers hooted and waved in agreement with the protest. High above the heads of protesters train drivers travelling over the viaduct added to the hooting with their own deafening blast of support. A protester from Malcoff described how though people didn’t have much time to make up their mind as they drove past we got “quite a few honks of support” and he added “I joined in the spontaneous singing that broke out.” There were massive protests throughout the country on the day the war started and Buxton played its part. For information on how Buxton Against War will continue to protest against the war policy of the present government - phone to get details of future activities.
