Buxton Against War
High Peak Stop the War Coalition

Press Release

31st March 2003

White Flowers became the symbol of peace protesters on Saturday when campaigners staged a morning vigil in Spring Gardens. As the war enters its second week and casualties on all sides mount the national debate has moved to concern over the safety of our troops and whether they should be brought home and a UN Peace negotiated. A new embroidered High Peak Against War banner was held in silence by women in black as peace protesters handed white roses, freesias, chrysanthemums and tulips to passers by. Many Buxton people and visitors to Buxton placed a single flower at the base of the fountain to mourn the dead on all sides and to show respect and sorrow at the destruction and waste of war. As she offered flowers to passers by, a member of Buxton Against War explained that the purpose of the morning vigil was a patriotic one, “We support our soldiers by wanting them home and don’t want anyone to have to die just for oil.” Holding an anti – war placard, one of the protesters said, “It is touching to see the response of people on the street. As the death toll mounts we must do all we can to stop the suffering of everyone involved in this war whether military or civilian, whether British, American or Iraqi and we must prevent further suffering for the families and friends of those who have loved ones fighting this unnecessary war.”

Another huge national demonstration is planned for April. Buxton Against the War together with High Peak Stop the War Coalition will be organising coaches to take all those from the area wishing to show their dislike of our governments policy in pursuing this war instead of using diplomacy and the UN route. The next National Anti - War Demonstration will be held in London on 12th April. For more information phone.
