Letter

6th June 2003

Dear Sir,

So no WDMs, increased terrorism in the world, the people of Iraq suffering - many of them complain “it was better before”, and lots of depleted uranium every where causing cancer and birth defects and possibly Gulf War Syndrome. Tom Levitt has been noticeably quiet over the current situation in Iraq, and particularly over Tony Blair’s embarassment regarding the “disappearance” of the weapons of mass destruction. The exposure of dubious dossiers and fraudulent claims, from the use of PhDs as intelligence to the production of forgeries linking Iraq to Nigerian uranium not to mention the convenient discovery of “incriminating” letters conveniently found in burnt out buildings, all add to the feeling that we are being lied to.

And the aftermath of the war opposed by the majority in Britain and around the world has given the result so often predicted. The massive oil reserves are safely in the hands of the United States, terrorism has tragically and dramatically increased leading to further loss of life and there is greater hatred and instability in the world.

Because of the desperate need for reconstruction the United Nations had little option but to formally acknowledging the take-over of Iraq by the United States. The long planned “regime change” has produced the required end result - the now official US control of Iraq’s vast oil reserves and we are left with an “ugly peace”. In fact the war goes on; in Iraq as a low level guerrilla conflict and as George Bush’s continuing war “against terror” in the rest of the world. Iran, Syria, North Korea and Cuba are now bullied and threatened – further US aggression cannot be ruled out. Are we to accept the next round of “untruths” to justify the use of our armed forces and our taxes to further assist the United States in its quest?

Meanwhile the people of Iraq suffer, demonstrators are shot by the occupying forces, there is little safety, little work and often no essential services. We have wrecked the infrastructure and relatively little is being done to restore basic facilities. Cholera and typhoid are now a problem. And this the result of a war of aggression and invasion pursued by our Prime Minister and supported by a majority of our MPs.

We need politicians who represent us in our opposition to our nation’s increasing involvement in illegal and unecessary wars – in our opposition to our nation’s subservience to the United States. The point about democracy is that our elected representatives should do just that – represent us. The other essential element in any democracy is honesty. If we are continually lied to how are we to make meaningful use of our so called “democratic” system? Buxton Against War continues to campaign for peaceful solutions to world problems and also for honesty and proper representation in government.

Yours sincerely
Secretary
